GARAGE DAYS: vintage sepia finds

I found these photo in my garage. Not the car. Too bad.

I was rifling through some old things I inherited [read stole] and came across these fabulous old sepia images of mum and dad below. This is the ‘real’ sepia. None of my ‘fake it’ sepia to be found here. I don’t remember ever seeing this picture before which is strange, as my favourite pastime as a child was to dig into the back of my grandmother’s sideboard and ponder all the ‘stuff’ in there. That ‘stuff’ would now be the things we drool over. Vintage silver, glassware, my dad’s racing trophies and some lovely images of my mother’s ballroom dancing days. I have a few of these items stashed away and promise to take some reasonable photos to post one day. [i hope my brother is not reading this – need to stash the stash]

Now back to this image. I have no idea of the date, but assume it is the late ‘40’s. My father use to race cars at Sydney’s Oran Park racetrack ... so imagine it was taken there, or perhaps a picnic drive through the National Park.

Looks like mum fell for the guy with the fast life! I am sure my grandfather would not of been impressed. Or my grandmother for that matter, but eventually they must of caved in, as here I am today to tell you this tale.

And here is an inset of the detail.

Wish I could zoom in on that dashboard.

Funny the things you forget about. We kids [4 of us] were always playing in dad’s racing cars that sat in the driveway. Sometimes in working order and sometimes in disrepair. Either way to us, it was a lot of fun.

Well I have not posted any beautiful interiors lately. My mind has been in other places. I do have a favourite house I want to show you, so I’ll be warming the scanner up for next time.

OMG! what fabulous pics to find, are you sure they are yours lol - look like they came from some kinda movie set - he is gorgeous, well she is too, sigh...

you are right about those old things we now all covet, you know I was just talking to my mum in England about old Eiderdowns, I am SERIOUSLY needing to buy one and she told me how she literally threw away all her Grandmas eiderdowns, heaps of them and all her beautiful china because not only did no-one want it but even the op-shops said no to it b/c it they were overstocked with 'old stuff'

now I think I might kill someone to get an old eiderdown on the end of my bed

Would have been fun to find the car! That shot is so great. Your father certainly wasn't your average 9 to 5 guy. I wish I had a photo of my parents in their VW Bug that they owned in the 60's.

What fantastic pictures. My husband and brother-in-law have just come back from driving through Spain and France in a Morgan, which I think might be the car in your pictures. They get so much attention when they are in the Morgan now, so I'm sure your relatives had even more, especially as they are so good looking. XXXX

Hi again, Just to apologise for not realising it was your parents. I was so wanting to comment I had forgotten who they were !!!! I can't seem to get into your email on my computer but if you want to sent it via my blog, I will send you a photo of my brother-in-laws car for you to have a look at. Lots of love. XXXX

I'm with Sarah too. My Grannies stunning satin goose feather eiderdowns where 'donated' to The Vinnies. What was my Mum thinking! What a gorgeous couple your Mum & Dad made Julie. I'm a real speed freak, so I'm lovin' that car.

Oh wow, what fabulous pictures, I love them!!

That car does remind me of my uncle's Morgan, it's a similar shape - he bought a wreck and took years restoring it - now it is stunning.

Would you have any idea what happened to the Morgan?

My uncle bought a very old Morgan and kept it in his garage for 20 years planning to restore it. He never did so my other uncle bought it from him and spent years - and quite a few pounds! - restoring it....it is bright red and just beautiful.

From the old numberplate he was able to trace it back to the original owner who is now 90-something and living in northern Ireland! I think the Morgan factory/HQ in England might have such details.

Morgan owners are a special group, my uncle goes to meetings and all sorts :)
