Hi everyone...

The Last Time I Saw Venice
.
.
In my previous Venice post [here] I shared with you my 'First Last View' of Venice... The last photo from my first trip to Venice, and the difficulty to say goodbye and turn my face from the view, wondering if I would ever be lucky enough to see it again. Well I was.. that was 1993.. and this is 1996 and my second trip to Italy...
.
After spending my first week in Rome with some work colleagues, we travelled together to Venice and spent a further week enjoying the delights of this treasure. My work colleagues were actually on their honeymoon.. haha.. yes that's right I went on someone else's honeymoon.. sort of.. haha.. More coincidence we had both planned our travels at the same time.. but suffice to say we stayed in different hotels and met up during the day to wander the alley ways and squares and discover all the nooks and crannies many tourists never visit. A wonderful few days getting lost in the atmosphere and beauty and hoping some of the magic may work it's way into our very being.
.
.
.
.
Now this might sound crazy.. but when I booked my Venice accommodation, I purposely chose a tiny tiny attic room in a small pensione just back from St Marks Square.. When I say tiny.. well the head of the bed was situated at the top of the stairs.. so close I could lean out and touch the first stair... I had to sleep about face for fear of falling out of bed and tumbling head first down the stairs.. on top of this.. this room was the only access to the rooftop where the staff would regularly come through in the mornings to hang out the linens to dry.... So.. cramped ...no privacy... but.. I had access to the rooftop.. and therefore access to a secret world full of strange views and the beautiful rooftops of Venice.. Yes.. this was my purpose... all for the view.. Of course if I had zillions of dollars I might have preferred a view of the canal.. but my little rooftop hideaway idea paid off and this is the photo to prove it!!
.
.
.
A bird's eye view of the domes and rooftops from behind Basilica di San Marco.. [low flying bird!]
.
.
.
.
And the regular view.. taken from St Mark's Square [not that there is anything 'regular' about Venice]

The Last View
.
.
A few days later it was sadly time to leave Venice for the second time ... It was also goodbye to my Australian friends as I was off to spend a few days with my friend Paolo in Padua, before venturing off to Florence and two weeks of language school to prepare me for the rest of my Italian adventure . After picking me up from my hotel, Paolo and I slowly made that final walk back to his car.. I think he must have thought me a bit of a fruitloop really... Living so close to Venice it was an everyday thing for him to just walk off and not look back.. But for me it was agony.. My head was spinning and stomach doing flip flops ...I'm not sure whether it was angst to leave Venice or fear of starting out on the solo portion of my trip, but either way I was dragging my feet and when we reached the last bridge... the famous Rialto... and it was here I stopped.. pulled out the camera.. and took my last view of Venice.. facing south down the Grand Canal... My Last Last View of Venice... and now my favourite Venice photo...

The [Late]Blog Birthday Giveaway
.
.
So that is the sad goodbye to Venice for the moment... and finally this leads me to my giveaway.. I hope you know how much I have enjoyed your friendship, encouragement and inspiration in my first year of blogging.. In recent months I've been asked a few times if I sell my 'artwork'. Well at present I'm not sure if or when I will go down that path.. It still feels oddly strange to put my work up for sale for the first time.. So toying with this idea.. I had some of my photos professionally printed.. a test run if you like. I cannot tell you how strange, exciting and surreal that felt.... As a result.. I decided I wanted to share some of these with you and thought a giveaway would be more suitable... ease myself into releasing my mania onto the world.. haha... So I have picked a few of my favourite prints.... and today offer them up for a giveaway... Both professionally printed on archive paper.. just like the big kids do.... [without the text and watermarks of course!!]

So here they are ...
So here they are ...

Julie -- gorgeous photos, but to me and my way of thinking, it's the great stories you layer on top. really love what you share with us about the backdrop of these wonderful trips of yours. ciao bella! ;)
Julie,
This just made my day. I have absolutely loved your work since day one. The give-away is fabulous news, but hearing that you might be considering selling some of your art just thrills me. I'd love to be lucky enough to win, but to think I might be able to own one of your prints even if I don't win the contest is just wonderful.
You know I'm a huge fan and follower, and I will certain post your blog button. Have a wonderful weekend. Rita
Back to say I'm a follower, you KNOW I am!!!
yep, i was right, we were separated at birth. ;) I'm doing the same thing with my images, some i'm saving for the never-ending story i've been writing (which inspired me to do all the PS stuffus in the first place, as i couldn't find an illustrator who 'got me'). Isn't it exciting to see your work printed?! I wish you all the best in this endeavour, Miss Julie. You know... your could write a book, too... ;) ps: love the new header!
Beautiful photos and processing ... I love the mood you created with these ... lovely, lovely, lovely, from first to last!
Julie ~ I'm almost speechless. Your photography is nothing short of magnificent. Such a joy to read about your experiences & I know exactly what you mean by taking that final look and wanting to capture it to hold forever. It's like my heart sunk. Love this giveaway..one of us will be a very fortunate person. Hope you are doing well my friend? xx
Me again..I am installing your giveaway button on my wee blog!! Such an honor : D
xx
Julie I am an existing follower and always will be!! xxoxo
Julie,
It seems we've set the blog world abuzz with your wonderful news. I placed your button on my last post - of course you are the headline banner. I've already received comments thanking me for the heads up - everyone is equally excited as I was to hear the news. Rita
Out of sight, Awesome. Julie those are so
beautiful.. What did you use to write with ? Looks like lead .. Yvonne
Darling one, your work is simply wonderful. And you should be unafraid to put it in front of the marketplace, as you will most certainly be accepted. My son is a professional photographer, schooled in Parsons School of Design in Paris, his work is drastically different than yours, of course, but artists need to be clear in their own vision, not falter, and if you decide to venture forth, be determined to succeed. And you will. I adore your work.
I think it's the first time I see your new header -awesome, awesome! So expressive (and in a way Italian, haha). Particularly the second picture with the lantern up close hits on an emotion..., can't put my finger on it though right now. And your last view is stunning -what an exit!
Thanks for the chance to win one of your art photographs!!
Oh Julie, what lovely, lovely photographs and I would love to be the proud owner of one of them...I had to leave my home of 30 years , Venice, California, so yes i too know what it is like to "leave Venice"...so the sentiment works for me in my life...I am a follower...I would leave your thingy in my sidebar if I only knew how...
Watching your photos is like dreaming! It's hard to wake up...
val
PS; Putting you on my sidebar now!
And LOVE your new header... (God - how long has it been up like that with that beautiful Blue R?)
Yeah Julie!! I wish you'd been on my honeymoon too - and YOU STILL COULD BE! We haven't taken it yet ;-) Too busy adventure racing after the wedding. We were planning on the Iles Eloiennes off Sicily. Lots of blue for you. OH WHAT THE HECK! I'll leave Beaker here and we can go together ;-) You could always bring Paolo of course.
Wonderful wonderful photos? But you already knew that!
xxx
Dear Julie,
I'm sorry, everyone but, these photographs are just meant for MY wall !!!! haha. I have chucked everthing else away, just to make room for them. They are destined to be mine.... all mine !!
They are AMAZING Julie and, a beautiful giveaway. I think that you have truly excelled yourself this time. My favourite part was the attic room, where the staff sauntered through to hang the washing out !!.... but, the purpose of booking the tiny garret room certainly paid off and, the photograph from way up high is a triumph.
Thanks so much for the wonderful opportunity to have some 'Being Ruby' artwork on one of our wall's. Lots of love and thanks. XXXX
I think that you possibly know that I'm a follower !! hehe. XXXX
Your giveaway button will have pride of place on my blog. XXXX
Il faut dire que Venise est une belle inspiratrice : tes photos sont fantastiques !
Julie,
I have mentionned it already to you, that I so love seeing pictures of Venice! I can't get enough of them! Thank you so much for all the wonderful posts you bring! I could feel how you loved taken that view from the roof at the hotel! And I think that you have had a beautiful experience in your life at that little room! There were able to see Venice as others will never see!
I might think that you really have a sort of connection with Venice!
It is a great give away my friend!
xx
Greet
Oh Julie, I am sorry to sound repetitive but those are gorgeous photos and I am thrilled that you have taken steps to have your work professionally printed, ooh this could be the start of something big and wonderful.
Am putting the button on my blog immediately.
XX
The rooftop shot - be still my heart. Happy that you are having your photos professionally printed and spreading the love, Julie!!!
I'm also a big fan and follower!
Hi Julie! Well to start off, your goodbye to Venice almost brought a tear to my eye. So beautiful! You photography is awesome and when you do decide to sell them you will do so well! I am so excited for the chance to win your prints! Thank you! Jennifer:)

Hi Paula
Thanks for you lovely comments and entry... good luck.. xx Julie
Julie, I am so very impressed with the beauty of these photos. Your adventure must have been wonderful. Thank you for visiting my little space today. The only thing made by me is the banner, the other things are just treasures I collected right about the same time as the Alice movie came out. I have joined to follow your stunning blog! ~ Angela
Julie, I posted your giveaway button on my sidebar...a bit reluctantly since that will just add to the competition. :-) Such beautiful images...these could be the beginning of a whole new world for you. You really should consider venturing out and selling! ~ Angela
Hi Julie! What a lovely blog. Thanks for commenting on mine and plugging my giveaway. I've joined as a follower and hope to win your giveaway.
Hugs,
Shelley
Julie,
Those are so beautiful! I am a follower for sure. I really think you could and should selling! They are beautiful ditto!
smiles, alice
Oh my goodness! Your photos are nothing short of spectacular. I love the dark mood like a stormy sea and the font you use not only is it very nice I like the dimension of it.
I certainly will enjoy seeing the world via your eyes that capture everything so beautifully.
Your Venice pics are absolutely breathtaking! I've never been, but you've made me want to go more than ever.
Happy Sunday!
Now you've gone and done it, your going to get thousands of comments.
The photos are hauntingly beautiful. I suspect Venice is one of the most photographed cities in the world but you have captured the melancholy mood the city evokes no matter how much fun you were having on your friend's honeymoon.
The dynamics of your trip sound more French than Italian but when in Rome, do as the Aussies do.
Definitely sell your work.
X David
PS. Did you know that when the Berlin Wall came down the first place everyone wanted to go was Venice? They had to shut down all plane and train arrivals as the city was overwhelmed.
Fabulous photos! Makes me want to visit Venice tomorrow! Lovely giveaway!
I'm a new follower!
Hey Julie, Awoke this morning and suddenly thought...did I send the second comment thing? Not sure if I did or not so this is just a reminder that yes I am an avid follower and fan caught under the spell of the adventurous Ruby and the charm of the muse Ethel, not to mention the beauty of Ginger, haha love Katherine

From Jay [NZ]
Hi Julie, Jay from NZ here. I live in Hawkes Bay North Island. Just recently found your blog. I LOVE IT!! I love what you do with your photos.
I guess that it is photoshop where you manipulated your pics.
I was recently thinking I might have a go at that, it looks like a whole lot of fun. I went to France and Italy last year and have photos i could play with.
I dont have a blog or anything but would like to be in the giveaway draw.

Oh no, wait Julie!!!! Did I miss this - is it Friday in Sydney yet??? I am all confused!! If it is not too late, I would of course love to put my name in the hat. You have already heard me saying several times that it is time for you to go out broad with your artwork! Your photography is unbelievable. And if I don't win - I would like to buy something! I am serious.
I am also madly in love with Italy. I am pretty convinced that I have been an Italian in former life.
I am pretty sure I am a follower. I better double check!
Cyber hug,
Mon
Gosh I hope I'm not too late Julie! I've been on a bit of a roll with winning a few things lately, so here goes with your fabulous give-away!

Julie,
I think I'm too late, shooey. Today, the last day of your giveaway is my birthday. I found you via Laura of 52, How cool would this be for a birthday gift. Your pictures are truly amazing. My MIL spent 3 weeks in Italy last year & is a photographer. I'm sending her your blog, she'll love it. I'll be back often. Lisa
I know what you mean about selling your work. I've been getting more commissions as the result of blogging. It's definitely a surreal experience. Next step, ma dearie...ETSY! Yikes! :O xx
What a wonderful pictures! Next week I'm going to Venice too, but I have a Hotel In Mestre. Hotel Venezia. The bus stop is on the corner. So... maybe next time!!!
with love from Holland,
Ineke
Julie I've gotten lost in your blog, your work is truly amazing. Venice is one of my dream destinations, and seeing your photographs just reinforces my wish to go there someday. I loved your attic room story! I think one of the very special things about travelling is the details like that, and finding a small way to feel part of the landscape.
