IF IT’S TUESDAY: This must be Phuket

Some few months after the tragic Tsunami of 2004, I took a vacation to the beautiful island of Phuket. At first I considered cancelling, concerned tourists would be a hindrance to the Thai people so soon after the Tsunami. But I was assured they needed tourists to return to help boost their suffering trade. As it turned out, it was true. Although very quiet over there, I was welcomed with open arms by people I have never met and made to feel like a long lost friend returning to her home.

These top images show the view from my resort room at the Evason Phuket [a Six Senses Resort]. All images were taken on a disposable camera. Surprisingly some almost capture how enchanting this location really is, in a vintage, smudgy sort of way.

Did I mention I had my own private beach?

OH did I say MY private beach? OK the Resort’s private beach…

But it did feel like my own slice of heaven

Oh Ruby, I agree, your photos have a wonderful "feel" to them.

I'm glad you didn't cancel your trip. I remember reading exactly what you stated, that they needed the tourists to return and help their economy recover. Kudos to you!

I'm amazed by the painterly quality of the disposable camera. I really must try them again. I recently tried a Holger "toy camera", too. Lots of fun.

What beautiful pictures! It sounds like your trip to Phuket was relaxing and so good for an area so badly in need.

There's a slight chance that we may go this winter, as a detour, while we're in Southeast Asia. I've read lots of great things about Evasion. It looks gorgeous!

The photographs are gorgeous!! I think it's great that you didn't cancel the trip..., but it must have felt just a little bit strange to go there so soon after the storm, I imagine.

Lovely images! And the thought of a private, deserted beach, well, it sure sounds heavenly to me! I've had that in the Bahamas, but every place else always has lots and lots of people. I think I'll put it on my list of places I'd love to visit someday.

What beautiful shots Julie, and all done on a disposable camera.....it must be the skillful way you take them....It's funny, I always love the black and white version of your photographs, but this time, colour takes 1st place.I want to book my ticket to Phuket right now !!!! XXXX

Great disposable shots... more proof it's as much the artist behind the lens, as the lens itself.

I can't believe you took those with a disposable camera. They're so nice! Looks like a lovely vacation, the perfect spot to relax.

I agree beautiful photos, nice and grainy and smudgy. I love the people in Thailand, very proud and welcoming. I was in a bus crash (minor) in East Thailand a few years ago and an ancient man came up to me and said 'Thailand is sorry'. As if it was his fault! They are divine.

Amazing shots (again...am I becoming too predictable with my comments??)

My daughter is doing photography at a professional level. She buys cheap cameras to use because the "effects" are unusual and sometime brilliant!

I remember flying to france on boxing day of 2004 and watching the devistation on the news and the stress on travellers faces in Hong Kong

Hi Ruby,
Your photos brought back memories of the Christmas I spent in Phuket the year before the Tsunami. It’s such a beautiful area the people so gracious and welcoming. It's a place I would definitely return to. Thanks for sharing via Hooked on Friday.
Enjoy, Cathy
