National Tree Day

.

.

.

.

.

.

First of the month and time again for Project Genesis, initiated by our very own blogging gal-pal Suzan.

Time again to put our thinking caps for ways we can help our environment, whether it be large or small..

Every little change helps..

And as Suzan says .....

.

.

Create Change

The World Will Thank You

.

.

August 1 also happens to be National Tree Day here in Australia... An environmental initiative co-founded by Olivia Newton-John and Planet Ark in 1996, aimed at protecting our local biodiversity and encouraging future environmental custodians.. As you may know.. plants combat climate change by locking up carbon in their tissue. The planting of any tree or shrub will not only beautify your surroundings, but will positively impact climate change. By planting native trees and shrubs you can also help to increase biodiversity and protect the native wildlife in your own corner of the world. [more info here: http://treeday.planetark.org/]

Coincidentally.. wikipedia informs me that 2010 has been declared

International Year of Biodiversity!

[who knew!]

Doing My bit [sort of]

.

Now to do my bit I ran off to my local nursery today...

.

As I've haven't had a garden in over decade I was quite lost roaming around all the plants and went for those I've been pining for... Gardenias and Lavender [naughty me]. However I did also pick up a native and will do some more research before I run amok in the back garden. If you'd like to read other participants bringing you tips and tricks to help the environment.. pop over and visit our lovely host Suzan at Old Grey Mare blogspot .....

Project Genesis: Protecting Our Waterways

Winter in Sydney...

.

In fact these fabulous views are just down the road from my home and it is not lost on me how lucky I am to be able to enjoy all that nature provides... When summer returns, I will once again be swimming in the blue seas and waterways that surround Sydney. But for now.. I still get to take in these visual delights. In fact walks around the bay are one of my favourite pastimes. Even just a pit-stop between running errands is enough to lift my spirits and recharge my proverbial batteries. Needless to say it's worth protecting.

.

.

So to ensure that this beauty is still here tomorrow ..

.

.

I am joining in on Project Genesis, hosted by dear Suzan of Old Grey Mare blogspot. The purpose is to highlight the small changes we can make in our everyday life that will serve to protect our environment.

.

I know the devastating consequences of the BP oil spill are obvious to all.. What may not be so obvious is the constant stream of polluting we unknowingly cause ourselves, each and every day using petrochemical detergents.. ironically.. made from crude oil .. One change I've implemented myself is to go green with household cleaners and detergents. I will admit I first crossed over for selfish reasons.. Environment friendly products are just as gentle on me as they are on the environment.. and the upside is.. some products are cheaper than their toxic counterparts. Now I know this idea is not ground breaking, but I think worth considering..

Small Changes for Big Impact

.

.. your health will thank you.. ..the aquatic life will thank you..

..even your purse will thank you..

.

If you need a little encouragement.. check out this new commercial..

And think of the aquatic life being impacted by petrochemical products
