The ANZACS

THE ANZACS

Every year Australians and New Zealanders pause to remember and honour the brave ANZAC troops that landed on the beach at Gallipoli [Turkey] on April 25 1915. A tragic encounter, for both sides. That is the face of war. Men fighting for home and country. Their own and those of their allies. On this day we also commemorate all our troops that served in the armed forces. Men and women alike irrespective of age or rank, or where they served, they are all considered heroes of their nation.

The ANZAC Ode
They shall grow not old
As we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
Nor the years condemn

At the going down of the sun
And in the morning
We will remember them

Lest We Forget

I love that poem, it always gives me the shivers. My great grandfather was at Gallipoli and the Dardanelles with the allies. I have a photo of him in his uniform. It's one of my most treasured possessions.

My dad served in the U.S. Airforce during World War II. He was stationed in the Pacific during some of the most horrific fighting. After many, many, many months he was granted 4 weeks leave. These weeks were spent in Australia and New Zealand. The only thing he would ever speak about from that time in his life was how truly beyond wonderful the Australian & New Zealand people had been to him. He would never forget the kindness shown him. It took a lot for my dad to cry. Every time he would share his stories of those precious days, there were tears in his eyes.

I will say a prayer for the heroes of your nation, and say Thank You to everyone for my dad.

I loved reading this little bit of history and sharing it with my daughter. When she studied Australia they made and devoured Anzacs - the cookie. Since then my Mom has taken them to three different potlucks with great success.
