Atrani: The Water's Edge

If It's Tuesday: This Must Be Atrani

[or.. The Water's Edge]

Just a short scenic walk from Amalfi lies the pretty village of Atrani... It is here I stayed in a backpacker's hostel sixteen years ago.. and here I returned to relive that first glimpse of 'Santa Maria Maddalena'  as you turn the corner on the walk from Amalfi.  Some things never change and the beauty of this scene still captivated my heart and imagination.

I had little time to wander around but enjoyed every minute.  Especially conversing with the local shop keepers. They were keen to know if I thought Atrani had changed in the past sixteen years.. and I assured them it was exactly as I remembered it.. I was quite proud of that little conversation. Held completely in Italian from my rusty memory of two weeks at language school,  sixteen years prior.. It's these conversations that are always the most memorable.. Making a connection even with my poor Italian.

Leaving the village I turned back and took this shot..  I love the gentleman with his shadowy presence. Standing at the water's edge.. Is he contemplating life? Or just if a swim is in order?

These pictures are stunning, Julie! I am happy that all your great memories of Atrani will remain the same. I'm glad you remembered some of your Italian! What a pretty language.

Sorry I keep asking you about Positano...I have watched that movie a thousand times, I just never "knew" someone who had been there!!

XO,
Jane

You do some wonderful things to your photos. Atrani sounds like a wonderful place where time has stood still.

Julie, these are excellent! When is the shop opening? I'm not kidding.

Of course the Italians loved talking to you...it doesn't matter the proficiency of the speaker, as you know, but the idea that someone took the time to speak in Italian, outside of their comfort zone. Good for you!

It's so fitting how the ink outline effect lends a wavery, crumbly sort of feeling to the palazzo on the cliff, and turns the umbrellas into the suggestion of a rocky shore. I didn't even suspect they were umbrellas until the last picture. Very clever. Of course, the water colour feeling is just perfect for this beach scene, enhancing your "misty watercolour memories of the way you were" 16 years ago. Fun stuff!

This is just terrific, I like the style...spoke to Renee this morning and I was upset the butcher sliced the skin on my Turkey, from the neck to cavaty.
It will not be a Norman Rockwell picture. looks like it fell off
a truck. Renee started Preaching about being Thankful I have arms.
Wonder where she gets that. Ha-ha.
Love ya Julie,
wish you were here.

Julie, how sweet to arrive back home and find your message. I've missed so much in blogland lately and so enjoy visiting your blog seeing such beauty. You really have an eye for capturing the true essence of the places you capture in film. And the photo treatments work to further convey your spot on interpretation of that essence. So creative, intuitive and beautiful! Thank you for sharing your talent here. Wishing you a lovely weekend. Angela
