IF IT'S TUESDAY: this must be Montmartre

The Montmartre district in Paris, and the wonderful art of Toulouse-Lautrec.

I think this photo (below) is the stairs of Rue Foyatier, taken on my first trip to Europe in 1993. And.. my first travel pic here without the sea! Click on the colour pic for the larger version, and you will see a flash of red in the top righthand corner. I'm not sure, but I like to think it is a window box full of red blossoms to brighten the rainy day.

Montmartre is famously known as home to the Le Moulin Rouge and other nightclubs which were the gathering places of bohemian artists in the early 1900's. One being Toulouse-Lautrec who immortalised the district with his famous Posters of Jane Avril and other beauties. Here is a sample of some of his wonderful paintings & posters.

The works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

There are many movies to be found depicting Montmartre as their setting. La Vie En Rose, Amelie, Moulin Rouge! If you can find a copy of the 1952 version of Moulin Rouge, this is a fascinating, albeit tragic, account into the life of Toulouse-Lautrec and other artists of his period.

I saw that version many, many years ago. It was very sad. Shot in black and white added to the mood. Thank you for visiting my blog and your sweet comment. FYI my mom's name was RUBY. Ruby Marie. Happy Wednesday.

Yes, indeed a flower box! Montmartre is a dream. I am glad I walked the streets there once (and climbed the Eiffel tower too).

Hi Julie,
It took my breath away when I saw your post -- I love Toulouse-Lautrec! I have a fantasy of creating a small bathroom -- but with really high ceilings -- filled with Toulouse-Lautrec paintings. It would be like stepping into another world! Thanks so much for posting the paintings -- it made my heart flutter!

(smile) your photos bring back such rich memories for me. Of Montparnasse and the Le Rontonde brasserie, of the Lipp brasserie.. of seeing the smallest detail in a shop window, of watch Sylie Guillem perform and sharing a meal with friends.

I try to get to paris once a year, and everytime it feels like home...
