Just a short scenic walk from Amalfi lies the pretty village of Atrani... It is here I stayed in a backpacker's hostel sixteen years ago.. and here I returned to relive that first glimpse of 'Santa Maria Maddalena' as you turn the corner on the walk from Amalfi. Some things never change and the beauty of this scene still captivated my heart and imagination.
I had little time to wander around but enjoyed every minute. Especially conversing with the local shop keepers. They were keen to know if I thought Atrani had changed in the past sixteen years.. and I assured them it was exactly as I remembered it.. I was quite proud of that little conversation. Held completely in Italian from my rusty memory of two weeks at language school, sixteen years prior.. It's these conversations that are always the most memorable.. Making a connection even with my poor Italian.
Leaving the village I turned back and took this shot.. I love the gentleman with his shadowy presence. Standing at the water's edge.. Is he contemplating life? Or just if a swim is in order?
